Our Beginning
In 1852, what would eventually become the First National Bank of Huntsville and the earliest forerunner to Regions Financial, opened its doors as The Northern Bank of Alabama.
First National Bank of Montgomery, the second Alabama bank that would form the core of Regions, opened in a two-story building on Market Street in 1871 and had assets of more than $521,000 by 1875.
The third bank that would become part of Regions, Exchange Bank in Birmingham, opened its doors in 1928, with $35,000 in capital raised by members of the Birmingham Exchange Club.
All three banks weathered economic crisis in their early years, including the 1929 stock market crash and the Great Depression. It is remarkable that all three banks survived the Depression as four out of every 10 banks in Alabama failed during that time.
For three decades after the Great Depression, all three banks saw tremendous growth through innovation and mergers. Progressive industry leaders, they pioneered a hospital-based branch and banking at a military base. From offering the state?s first drive-through teller in the 1940s to early adoption of the credit card business in the 1960s, these institutions grew, always with a philosophy of taking care of customers, associates and communities.
Expanding
On July 2, 1970, the three banks?Exchange Security Bank of Birmingham, First National Bank of Huntsville, and First National Bank of Montgomery?filed an application with the Federal Reserve Bank to become a bank holding company. Combined, they had assets of $446 million. While each bank had different motivations for the new structure, the capacity for more lending, increased acquisition potential and job growth in the state were prevalent factors. Despite some early opposition, the Federal Reserve approved the creation of First Alabama Bancshares in a 5-to-2 vote in 1971.
From the 1970s through the 1990?s, the bank grew rapidly through expansion, acquisitions and introduction of new products, services and lines of business. Changes to the Interstate Banking Bill in 1986 permitted bank holding companies to purchase branches outside of the state in which they were chartered. This change in legislation led to unprecedented growth. Regions, which had $4.4 billion in assets in 1987, grew to $32.8 billion in assets and 667 locations by the end of 1998. An acquisition of Memphis-based Union Planters in 2004 was followed by a merger with cross-town rival AmSouth in 2006. The combination of these two major bank holding companies into the new Regions was the last major unforced financial transaction in the United States before the Great Recession started to show signs beginning in 2007.
